Explore the world’s only preserved 17th century ship. Located in the island of Djurgården, the museum displays The Vasa.

The 69 meter-long warship sank on its maiden voyage in Stockholm harbour in 1728 and was salvaged 333 years later in 1961. For nearly half a century, the ship has been slowly, deliberately, and painstakingly restored to a state approaching its original glory. The three masts on the roof of the tailor-made museum show the height of the ship’s original masts.

Vasa was ordered to be built by King Gustavus Adolphus in 1625-26 to be Sweden’s flagship for the reserve fleet. it was richly decorated with sculptures and new modern cannons, intended to impress the Swedish enemy - Poland. Vasa was war propaganda in the form of a ship and therefore an important symbol for Sweden, with the purpose of boast Sweden’s power and wealth.

Exhibitions

There are different exhibitions around the ship ranging from topics like life on board and its historical context. The film about the Vasa is shown in different languages. There is also an audio guide in different languages, to be used by visitors on their own mobile devices. The museum has free Wi-Fi. In addition, there is a well-stocked shop and a pleasant for lunch and fika. Free admission for children up to 18 years.

Unique Evening at the Vasa

At the vasa Museum, history, atmosphere, and experiences come together in a unique setting with the 17th-century ship Vasa as a backdrop. Since the current museum building opened in 1990, more than 3,000 evening events have been held here, giving them an extensive experience in creating well-thought-out arrangements where the guests are always the centre of attention.

The Ship Hall

The grand Ship Hall is particularly suitable for banquets, dinners or receptions in a magnificent setting. It can accommodate up to 800 guests for a seated dinner and up to 2,000 guests for a standing reception or mingling - perfect for corporate events, anniversaries, and other occasions where you want to create something extraordinary.

You can begin your evening with a drink and a tour of the ship before gathering at the table under Vasa’s figurehead. With the 400-year old shop as your table host, an atmosphere is created that makes the evening both unique and memorable. The arrangements are designed to suit your group - always with respect for the historic environment.

Evening Tours

They also offer the opportunity to book exclusive private evening tours of the museum. The tour can be combined with dinner at the Vasa Museum’s restaurant afterwards, or with a short mingling session in the Ship Hall before or after the tour. In the restaurant, they can accommodate seated dinners or standing receptions for up to 150 guests in an atmosphere setting by - a fine way to end an evening full of history.
