Since requirements differ by country and rental companies often have stricter rules, it’s important to check in advance and carry the correct documents before planning a self-drive trip in Europe. Here’s all you need to know.
Is an Indian Driving Licence Valid in Europe?
Yes, Indian travellers can drive in several European countries with valid Indian driving licence for short stays, but rules vary widely across the region. While some destinations may accept the licence on its own, some countries require an International Driving Permit [IDP] or an official translation.
What is an International Driving Permit [IDP]?
IDP is an official travel document that allows you to drive in foreign countries along with your valid Indian driving licence. It acts as a supporting document to your driving licence, especially when driving or renting a car abroad.
What does an International Driving Permit [IDP] do?
An IDP is essentially:
A translated version of your driving licence [in multiple international languages]
A document that helps foreign authorities understand your driving credentials
Proof that you are legally licensed to drive in your home country
Important Things to Know About IDP
An IDP is not a standalone driving licence
You must always carry it along with your original Indian driving license
It is usually valid for 1 year
It is widely accepted in most countries under international road traffic conventions
Many countries require an IDP because local police may not understand your licence language; car rental companies need standardised documentation; and insurance companies may require it for coverage validity.

Do you need an International Driving Permit [IDP]?
In most European countries, yes - an International Driving Permit [IDP] is strongly recommended or required. It is most often required in: Italy, Spain, Austria, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands. Even if the law in some of these countries may allow exceptions here, car rental companies almost always ask for an IDP, and police checks can also enforce it.
How to Get the IDP?
IDP is issued by the RTO in India. Follow the steps:
Go to the official Parivahan Sarathi Portal
Select your state and RTO
Choose ‘International Driving Permit [IDP]
Fill in your driving licence details
Upload documents [passport, licence, photo, etc.]
Pay the application fee online
Book an appointment if required
Even if you apply online, many cases still require a short RTO visit for:
Document verification
Biometric / photo capture
Submission of originals
IDP is issued within a few days to 2 weeks. In some cases, it can be issued the same day. You may collect it from the RTO or receive it by post. It acts as your official driving translation document for international travel and is often essential for renting cars abroad. It must be applied from India and it cannot be renewed abroad.
If you are planning a self-drive trip in Europe, assume IDP is required everywhere, especially in Southern and Central Europe.
