This recognition marks as a major milestone and highlights the cultural importance of Iceland’s swimming pools, most of which are geothermal-heated with outdoor facilities that remain open throughout the year.

With more than 120 pools across Iceland, they place an important role in supporting both physical and mental well-being while serving as some of the nation’s most cherished social gathering spaces. Each pool has its own unique identity, shaped by the local community it serves. They are also among the few places where people disconnect from their phone and engage in genuine conversations with one another.

Reykjavik Major Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir said, ‘Geothermal energy and our swimming pools are a vital part of Reykjavik’s culture and history, and we are proud of this UNESCO recognition. Each of the eight pools operated by the City of Reykjavik has its own identity and atmosphere, yet all offer a sanctuary in a busy world. There is nothing more wonderful than seeing people of all ages gather in the pools to nourish body and mind.’

A living tradition that brings people together

The listing recognises the cultural importance of Iceland’s swimming pool culture. The nomination highlighted swimming pools as inclusive public spaces where people of all ages and background gather to swim, exercise, socialise, with friends and strangers alike, enjoy a sense of community, or simply relax in the warmth of the water.

Swimming pool culture is deeply woven into daily life in Iceland, supporting physical, mental, and social well-being.
